Orthotic treatment forms an important part of the whole treatment programme needed by children who have cerebral palsy. The goals of orthotic treatment are to assist function and to control during growth with the overall aims of:

• Correcting and Preventing deformity
• Providing a base of support
• Assist in skills training
• Improving efficiency when walking
• To improve the efficiency of gait

Within these goals there are always some compromises and it is the clinician and therapist’s role to decide which are the over riding considerations when prescribing.

For each child who sees us, we need to consider whether using single rigid bracing, lycra or silicone or a combination of all available will be most appropriate.
